What is the importance of praying Sivalinga

In Shiva Maha Purana it's mentioned that once Brahmaji went to 'Kshirsagar' (the abode of Shri Vishnu) accompanied by the gods and asked Lord Vishnu how a man liberates him from his sorrows Lord Vishnu told them that this purpose could be met by worshiping ShivaLinga.

All the Gods, then prayed to Lord Shiva, who after being pleased, instructed 'Vishwakarma' to construct a Shivalinga for them. Vishwakarma then made a Shivalinga for Kuber, a Shivalinga of yellow diamond of Dharmaraj, a Shivalinga of dark colored diamond for Varun, a Shivalinga of Indraned diamond for Shri Vishnu and a goldden Shivalinga for Brahmaji. Similarly, Vishwadeva was given a Shivalinga made up silver, the Ashwini Kumars were given Shivalinga made up bronze, Maa Laxmi gave a Shivalinga made up of Crystal (Spatik), Sun-god was given a Shivalinga made of copper and the moon given a Shivalinga made of pearl

It has been further mentioned that making offerings in the form of lotus, Shatapatra, Shankhapushpi, the leaves of wood apple tree, helps in wealth and prosperity. For becoming free from disease, fifty lotus flowers should be offered to the Shivalinga. Mrityunjay-Jap should be chanted for five lakh times, for all types of accomplishment. One lac dhatura-fruits should be offered for long life, as well as for attaining salvation.
